Former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader John Tory was born and raised in Toronto, the son of John A. Tory, the founder of the law firm, Tory, Tory, Deslauriers (now Torys LLP). John's introduction to politics began when he was 14 and bought a membership into the Ontario Young PCs. In 1981, when John was 26, he was appointed principal secretary to Premier Bill Davis, serving until the latter's 1985 retirement. John moved to federal politics in the late 1980s, working as Brian Mulroney's campaign chair and later in the same capacity under Kim Campbell. In the 1990s John returned to the private sector, becoming president and CEO of Rogers Media and Canadian Football League commissioner. John wasn't finished with politics, however. In 2003 he ran in the Toronto mayoral campaign, finishing a strong second to eventual winner David Miller. In 2004, after Ernie Eves announced that he would relinquish the Ontario PC leadership, Tory's centris campaign defeated Jim Flaherty and Frank Klees. In the 2007 provincial election, John Tory lost not only his bid to become premier but also his attempt to become the MPP for Don Valley East. In the aftermath, John decide to step aside from politics. He resigned as leader and returned to broadcasting, where he became host of an open-line talk show called Live Drive on CFRB 1010 in Toronto. And, on Friday, GOP presidential hopefuls made their best attempt to woo those potential supporters at CPAC — the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. Speaking on his record as Massachusetts' governor, Mitt Romney grabbed early unwanted headlines with this ad-libbed comment. "I was a severely conservative Republican governor." Rachel Maddow's mocking reaction mirrored that of many others: "Mitt Romney: Not just conservative, but severely conservative." And from the other end of the spectrum, Rush Limbaugh was left puzzled as well... "I have never heard anybody say 'I'm severely conservative.' " Nitpicky? Are racists dumb? Do conservatives tend to be less intelligent than liberals? A provocative new study from Brock University in Ontario suggests the answer to both questions may be a qualified yes. The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on IQ tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood. IQ, or intelligence quotient, is a score determined by standardized tests, but whether the tests truly reveal intelligence remains a topic of hot debate among psychologists. Dr. Gordon Hodson, a professor of psychology at the university and the study's lead author, said the finding represented evidence of a vicious cycle: People of low intelligence gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, which stress resistance to change and, in turn, prejudice, he told LiveScience. Why might less intelligent people be drawn to conservative ideologies? Because such ideologies feature "structure and order" that make it easier to comprehend a complicated world, Dodson said. "Unfortunately, many of these features can also contribute to prejudice," he added. Dr. Brian Nosek, a University of Virginia psychologist, echoed those sentiments. Workers were told Thursday that the temporary shutdown would start March 11. "Weak market conditions continue," mill manager Brad Pelley said in a statement. However, he added, the sales team is looking for new orders and that could mean a shorter shutdown period. Resolute Forest Products, which owns the mill, said world paper markets are saturated. It's the second shutdown at the mill since before Christmas, when it was closed for three weeks for the same reasons. John Leefe, the mayor of the Region of Queens Municipality, said the company had originally considered a five-week-long shutdown. "A three-week shutdown is certainly an improvement on that," he told CBC News on Friday. "I am told by management that this is all market-related, that they are endeavouring to spread the pain through the Resolute mills." Late last year, unionized workers at the mill voted to cut 110 jobs in an effort to reduce labour costs and help save the operation, which used to employ about 300 people. The provincial government also recently announced a $50-million rescue package aimed at saving the mill.
